Park to Greet Those Entering Ocean Beach

City councilman Kevin Faulconer joined city employees and representatives from the Ocean Beach Community Development Corporation on Tuesday morning to celebrate the groundbreaking for Phase 1 of a 2 phase project to improve the first intersection residents and visitors encounter upon entering O.B, at West Pt. Loma and Sunset Cliffs Blvd.

In 2002, the redevelopment raised money to purchase the lot and demolish Anthony’s Pizza, a local restaurant that stood at the site. Over the last eight years, they’ve continued fundraising in an attempt to refashion the land as a community park featuring native trees and plants, decorative walkways, and other artistic features.

“This would not have happened without the great community spirit of our Ocean Beach community and certainly the generous donations of Ocean Beach and OBecians,” Faulconer began before introducing and crediting Brian Pottenger, president of the OB development group; Tony Heinrichs, interim director of engineering and capital projects for the city; Ron Lacey of Mayor Sanders’ office; Denny Knox of the Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association; and Jim Musgrove of the Ocean Beach Town Council.

The first phase of work is expected to be completed by February 2011.
