Entertainment was provided by the Cheeseballs, which bills itself as “the Bay Area’s top party band.” … Downtown hotel mogul Doug Manchester, who is forging ahead with that controversial development project on Navy property across from the Broadway Pier, has sent out an email promoting a new-age self-improvement extravaganza at the Sports Arena called “The Secret to Having Your Best Year Ever.” Including motivational stars like Anthony Robbins and Lisa Nichols, the January 19 event promises to teach attendees how to “double or triple your income in 2008,” “find and nurture your ideal relationships,” “infuse your life with positive spirituality,” and “get healthy and stay healthy forever.” Proceeds go to the Jenna Druck Foundation, a nonprofit group specializing in “bereavement support.” … The office of Sheriff Bill Kolender has been spending money at some posh resorts, purportedly on lobbying business. According to state disclosure records filed by the sheriff’s department, Kolender representatives spent $631.28 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in South Lake Tahoe and $3833.29 at the Hyatt Sacramento hotel during last year’s second quarter.
