Baby Bushka, Peachy San Diego, Unwritten Law, Poltz Anniversary, Mraz Kaleidoscope

Tribute bands tend to pay homage to long-gone acts, rather than still-extant groups who might compete for ticket sales, but British singer-songwriter Kate Bush performs so rarely that few are likely to have caught her in concert. More’s the pity, since Bush’s operatic brand of theatrical prog-pop is so well suited for stage presentations, something that’s not news to the members of local all-star Kate Bush tribute Baby Bushka.

Tour Peachy teams up with Postmark Records to present Peachy San Diego in the Midway District. The bill includes local lo-fi star Wavves, aka former Music Trader store manager Nathan Williams, along with Destroy Boys, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Sextile, Zulu, Glare, Hockey Dad, Spy, Mind’s Eye, Alternative Citizen, Blank Space, Donna Drive, and Dolphins On Acid.

Unwritten Law at Observatory North Park February 17

Unwritten Law formed in Poway in 1990, with their 2005 album Here’s to the Mourning debuting at number 51 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart, the band’s highest debut to date. Not long ago, they released a short-film consisting of two music videos for the tracks “Magnetic” and “The Hum,” off their seventh studio album The Hum, their first new full-length in ten years. The bill includes Agent 51 and Urethane.

Steve Poltz 15th Annual 50th Birthday Bash at Belly Up February 17

Steve Poltz is probably best known for his stint with the Rugburns, of “Hitchhiker Joe” fame, and for recording two albums with Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze. His Taylor 510, manufactured locally, has its own claim to fame as the guitar he used to write “You Were Meant For Me,” which became a hit for fellow local Jewel. Poltz will celebrate his 50th birthday for the 15th time by welcoming a guest player Jay Cobb Anderson of the band Fruition to the Solana Beach stage.

Jason Mraz Foundation: Kaleidoscope at CA Center For the Arts, Escondido February 17 and 18

Jason Mraz's Kaleidoscope is a musical performance by San Diego area arts program students from eight local non-profits. Members from A Step Beyond, Banding Together, Diversionary Theatre, Monarch School, San Diego Young Artists Music Academy, Tap Fever Studios, Tierra Caliente Academy of Arts, and Wheelchair Dancers Organization will join Jason Mraz on stage and perform songs from his catalog to shine a light on the importance of inclusive arts programming.
