What's going on with downtown San Diego's Horton Plaza?

Jimbo’s founder Jim “Jimbo” Someck: “It’s not any secret that (Westfield is) trying to get out from underneath (Horton Plaza).” (Matthew Suárez)

  • What happened between 1985 and now?

  • The future of Horton Plaza is so clouded that Jimbo’s, one of the mall’s newer tenants, has gone to court against the owner Westfield America over millions of dollars in lost sales, alleging that Westfield has virtually abandoned the property.

  • I’ve made $250 in 30 hours — that works out to a profit of $8.33 per hour. But I’ve also spent $55 on gas. (From Reader story in July)

You won't get rich charging Lime scooters

  • LimeBike is big on punny names — you don’t pick up scooters, you “harvest” limes. Then you take them home and, instead of charging them, you’ll “juice” the rides before “serving” them to the public at a designated drop point, all of which seem to be confined to Downtown, Mission/Pacific Beach, and North Park, though the scooters seem to find ways to travel far beyond their home markets.

  • Julie Page said Nathan’s frustration caused him to take two stress leaves in his last year at Lincoln.

I believe Nathan Page is in heaven

  • Educators who knew or worked with Page agreed to be interviewed but not for attribution. Aware of the adversarial relationship between Page and school officials, they fear retribution from administrators if they speak in support of him. They say his final battle at Lincoln — one he lost which may have been the catalyst for his suicide — was on behalf of a student who was allegedly sexually assaulted in a school restroom.

  • At one of the snake houses, Adam encountered a fellow wearing a plaid shirt and a kind of space helmet. Adam shooed Schuylkill and me away. This was evidently some private, pre-arranged meeting.

Adam Parfrey goes to the San Diego Zoo

  • It is not generally appreciated that famous publisher Adam Parfrey once lived just off Lincoln Boulevard, a dismal stretch of gasoline-alley slightly east of Venice, California, and just over the line in Santa Monica. Twenty years ago I used to see him in the local coffeehouse. Sometimes he had his current girlfriend with him, sometimes it was just Adam.

Mission Hills visitor to Vietnam sucked into MIA search

  • Antonio Palma felt something or someone was driving him to visit Vietnam, a place to which he had no ties. Not knowing what awaited him and traveling to the other side of the world without his St. Christopher medal made him uneasy.

Unsolved murder of gringos on the Sea of Cortez

  • “I confronted two guys, two nights before.” Before the deadly night, Eddie had his own confrontation. His encounter was on a Wednesday night not long after midnight. “I was in the bathroom in the middle of the night, it’s dark, I heard them talking,” Eddie remembered. “The motion detector light came on and they were walking past the house, talking, towards the beach.”

    The microclimates of Highway 79

  • From Temecula, to Aguanga, Warner Springs, Julian, Lake Cuyamaca, and Descanso, Highway 79 winds, climbs, and wiggles 82 miles through deserts, mountains, foothills, valleys, and oases. Two botanists are showing me the entirety of Highway 79, because it passes through some of the most biologically diverse areas in San Diego County, a county that is, they say, arguably the most biologically diverse in the United States.
