Hey Chels in City Heights, Christopher Hollyday in La Jolla, Lucy’s Fur Coat in Little Italy, Earthless in Solana Beach, Almost Monday in East Village

Hey, Chels was founded by Jacque Mendez (New Way On) on vocals and electric piano, Stephanie Presz (the Newports) on drums, Kevin White (Squarecrow, Londons Falling) on guitar, and Ricky Schmidt (Western Settings, Caskitt) on bass. Their debut self-titled dream pop EP, produced by Patrick Ryan Heaney (Cage the Elephant, Cold War Kids, the War On Drugs), was followed by a full-length called Everything Goes. The July 27 City Heights bill includes Jagged Baptist Club, Ughh, and Auz Fontaine.

Jazz saxophonist Christopher Hollyday recorded his debut album Treaty when he was only 14, becoming the youngest person at that time to play the Village Vanguard in New York. Since relocating to Escondido in 1996, he has earned a Master’s degree at SDSU and taught music at Orange Glen High School and Valley Center High School. As part of the La Jolla venue’s Fourth Friday Jazz series on July 28, Hollyday will present the music of Bud Powell.

Alt-grunge rockers Lucy’s Fur Coat formed in 1991, going through several lineup changes and earning some national acclaim before going their separate ways. They’ve reunited several times over the years for one-off shows, including a 2008 set and a pair of September 2015 performances. Their two-night reunion in Little Italy July 28 and 29 includes openers Dig.

When it launched in 2001, the space rockers of Earthless were mostly inspired by Krautrock and Japanese psychedelic bands. They took home a 2007 San Diego Music Awards for Best Hard Rock Album for Rhythms From a Cosmic Sky, and they’ve gone on to multiple tours of Europe, Australia, and Japan. Their appearance in Solana Beach July 30 includes an opening set from Los Dug Dug’s.

With their indie pop single “only wanna dance” making its way up the Alternative Radio Chart, almost monday will launch a 15-city co-headline tour with Weathers kicking off August 4 at East Village’s Quartyard and wrapping on August 25 in Richmond, VA. They’ll also join AJR for select dates and will be making several festival appearances including Wonderstruck, Have A Nice Trip (Korea), Wonderbus, and Life Is Beautiful.
