52-year-old Private Investigator Dave O’Connor surfs Scripps pier.

Are you originally from San Diego?

No but I have lived here for 30 years. I moved here straight out of college just to surf. My girlfriend and I packed up our car and drove here from Florida. We floated right into La Jolla and stayed. We’ve been here ever since.

What’s your favorite surfing spot?

Black's Beach. That’s the whole reason we stayed in La Jolla. Scripps Pier is my second-favorite spot.

How often do you surf?

I used to surf every day when I was younger, but now my body doesn’t let me. I get out as much as I can.

Do you have a favorite surfing moment?

Probably my first ever surf trip when I was teenager. I went to Barbados. It was great. From that moment on I started taking two surf trips a year. I have been to the Congo, Samoa, Fuji, all through Central and South America, and Africa.

Which location was your favorite?

Indonesia. I don’t go on two trips a year anymore. I try to do at least one though.

What is your least favorite local beach?

Probably Ocean Beach. It’s just a little dirtier down there.
