How long have you been surfing?

Severin: 2 ½ years

Cody: 20 years

Favorite surf spot?

Cody: This spot (Del Mar) and Beacon’s. I mean, the word is already out on this spot right here, so yeah, probably Beacon’s in Leucadia.

Severin: Here and Sunset Cliffs.

Favorite moment in the water?

Cody: We have this thing, where if we have a really good [surf] session, we’ll say, if a shark were to attack us, we would not even fight back. We’d just give up. I’d let him grab me. Those are the days when it’s sunny out. The water is nice; probably a little bit bigger than today, like 4-5ft. Those are the best times.

Severin: I agree, good conditions. I love a sunny day and a little bigger [waves] than today.

Any surf injuries?

Cody: Just one. A longboard got me. I had to get stiches. It was one-foot that day. They say it’s more dangerous surfing when it’s smaller than bigger, because you get more complacent.

Surf etiquette you wish people would follow?

Cody: Read where people are dropping in. If they are dropping in right or left, do the opposite.

If you could surf anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Severin: Bali. The water is so nice and warm there and the people are friendly.

Advice to new surfers?

Severin: Go again and again. The first couple of times, you will not like it because you’re just going to fall over and over. But, as soon as you stand on your first wave, you’re going to love it.

Cody: I would say, just do it! Once you get out there a few times, it’s not just about surfing, it’s being out there in the water. Don’t worry about the crowd or if it’s territorial. Outside of PB and OB, which are little bit more territorial than they once were, everywhere else in San Diego is pretty chill. Just get in the water and have fun.
