Rancho Santa Fe mansion infused with Taj Mahal marble and Wolf appliances

8400 square feet of living space

Indoor? Outdoor? No wait, it’s both! “The coveted SoCal lifestyle at its apex.”

“Hollywood glamour finds its home in Rancho Santa Fe,” or so promises the listing description, posted on Realtor.com, of 5516 La Crescenta, a newly-constructed mansion with 8400 square feet of living space, six bedrooms, and seven baths set on a nearly four-acre parcel in San Diego’s toniest inland neighborhood.

“Timeless elegance merges with arousing modern appeal to create a ravishing private residence,” continue the remarks. Interior appointments include “a plethora of European white oak covered ceilings,” temperature-controlled glass wine storage vault off the formal dining room and foyer, and two ground-floor suites, either of which would be suitable for a master.

There’s also a display kitchen open to the great room, featuring “waterfall Taj Mahal marble slabs, Italian luxe cabinetry and Wolf appliances,” including a double-sized commercial range. The walk-in pantry is located out of sight behind the kitchen. The great room is flanked on one side by a wall of windows that completely retract to connect the space with an outdoor patio and on another by a wet bar with ice maker and “backlit waterfall cristalla slab” countertops. Rounding out the room is an oversized gas fireplace sitting below a television seamlessly enshrined in the overmantel.

Why open a window when you can retract it completely?

The main master features a bedroom with more than 500 square feet of living area, including a retreat, gas fireplace, and private outdoor patio area. There’s also an oversized walk-in closet and bath with dual vanities separated by a makeup area and freestanding tub. Along with the second master downstairs, three more en-suite bedrooms are on the second level, and a “flex room” next to the office off the garage offers space for a new owner to install a private gym or to make some other use of the space.

The home’s hilltop perch takes advantage of unobstructed golf course and mountain views, with an additional 2200 square feet of outdoor living space underneath a covered loggia that “captures the coveted SoCal lifestyle at its apex.” The space features radiant ceiling heaters, a “sunken fireside lounge,” and a full outdoor kitchen with barbecue and more Wolf appliances.

Sandwiched between a pair of manicured green lawns, a “massive wet edge pool and spa that blends seamlessly with the mesmerizing rolling hills and complementary sky” rounds out the backyard. Elsewhere on the property is a 1032-square-foot detached guest house with its own full kitchen, master suite, and laundry room.

Public records show the property last sold in 2018 for a reported $1.7 million, less than the $1.9 million asking price for the 2400-square-foot home (built in 1970) that previously occupied the site. Despite recent updating, the property was advertised at the time as a vacant land listing, indicating a teardown was always viewed as that home’s fate.

With construction completed just last year, the new La Crescenta estate was listed for sale for the first time in early January of 2020. It carries a price tag of $9,750,000 that remains unchanged to date.
