The “Bubblegum Doom” of Fox Medicine

Two-piece glam thrashers Fox Medicine only have one San Diego gig to recall. But they made that one memorable.

“San Diego has an impressive music community, and for my tastes, it’s a goldmine of nonconformist, heavy, super-creative artists,” opines guitarist/singer Neezy Dynamite. “The local bands Gloomsday and POOR were both incredible and more than hospitable. We played at the Black Cat Bar, which is a cozy little place on University Avenue.”

“I’m obsessed with the music scene in San Diego, actually. You have so many great bands and none of the pretentiousness, which is super rad. My favorite SD bands right now are OhCult, Secret Fun Club, and of course, the Locust!”

Ms. Dynamite, joined by her musical other half, drummer Vanny Keeps, aims to make it 2-for-2 in SD on December 6 at the ‘Til Two Club. They hail from Portland, Oregon, which Keeps praises as a “fun little bubble.” Although, “Sometimes I feel like we don’t fit in, ‘cuz we’re too weird. There’s the metal people, the punk people, and the indie rock people… not sure where that leaves us — which is why we made our own genre, Bubblegum Doom!”

The music’s odd, but the band claims a whole aesthetic unto itself, including the costumes. “The classic leotard, belt, and cape look is my favorite,” enthuses Dynamite. “I feel like a super villain or wizard from outer space. It feels right.”

“I think it’s important to dress yourself up for a performance. The whole grunge thing resulted in all these jean and t-shirt bands, and I think it’s so boring. Please transport me, give me something to look at… My mom sews most of my capes when she’s in town. I put her to work. Now I have a cape for every day of the week. I’m an experimental dresser in my everyday life, too, so it’s not hard to exaggerate my look from there.”

They enjoy touring, Dynamite says, though she admits to being a little brought down once by “Some guy trying to take pictures of my feet after the show.”

Confesses Keeps, “The plan is to take over the world, that’s no secret. Also, I want to check out other Earth-like planets for the next tour, see what else is out there.”

“We kinda thrive in the chaos and just need everything to be happening at once. We just keep moving, like a shark.”
