Hildegard of Bingen had her name out there first

I always enjoy reading Garrett Harris’s classical-music column in the Reader (“Notre Dame – more modern than you think,” Classical Music, April 26). One cavil, however, about a statement in the current issue: “Léonin’s music … represents the first examples of a specific composer being associated with specific pieces of music.” I believe that honor would go to Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), who composed 82 songs for her play Ordo Virtutum in 1151, when Léonin was 16.
