San Diego Symphony's musical march madness
Please don't do the hummy thing that so often accompanies a famous melody.
Let’s take a look at March and the three concerts within its springish confines which hold some promise.
The first set of concerts is from The Mainly Mozart Festival’s Spotlight Chamber Series. The repertoire for the concert on March 9 is Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue for strings in C minor and Schubert’s String Quartet in C major. The second concert on March 10 replaces Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue with his String Quartet No. 6.
The Henschel Quartett — the double T is correct — is an award-winning foursome hailing from Germany and playing in San Diego for the 9th and 10th. They will be joined in these concerts by renowned cellist Lynn Harrell. Both concerts include wine receptions one hour before the music starts.
The venue for March 9, 7:00 PM, is the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club. The venue for March 10, 7:30 PM is The Scripps Research Institute. Both these locations are designed to bring the audience up close to the music and the musicians.
Also on March 9 is The San Diego Symphony’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1: Titan as conducted by Edo de Waart. I, for one, am not convinced of the titanic status of this symphony when compared to what Mahler followed it up with. However, it is a dreadfully popular symphony, and Mahler is Mahler.
There is a tune in the final movement which you all know so please try to avoid doing the recognition hummy thing that so often accompanies a famous melody. Why? Because we’re better than that.
There are two performances: Friday, March 9, 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 11, 2:00 p.m. Both concerts are at The Jacobs Music Center-Copley Symphony Hall.
Is there a more famous orchestra than The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields? Well, yes, yes there are. However, this is the orchestra which played all the music in Amadeus and was founded in 1958 by the late Sir Neville Marriner. Virtuoso violinist and Asteroids video game champion, Joshua Bell, is the new music director for The Academy.
The La Jolla Music Society is presenting The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields on Friday, March 16, 8:00 PM, at The Jacobs Music Center-Copley Symphony Hall.
