Lake Jennings spookiness just before it closes

Scripps oceanographers and Helix Water will put dye in water in November

The dye will dissipate by November 16.

If you see an eerie reddish tint to the water at Lake Jennings on Halloween, it’s not spooks and goblins at work; it is a result of the lake’s hydraulic mixing action being tested by Scripps Institute of Oceanography working with the Helix Water District. The dye will allow researchers to build a computer model of the hydraulic movement of the lake to better assist in future studies and is EPA approved. It will dissipate by the end of the project, which runs from October 30 through November 16. Though no fishing or lake access will be allowed during the testing period, the lake will reopen to all water activities on November 17.

The fishing lately has been good at Jennings. There are some redear sunfish eating wax worms and nightcrawlers in Cloister Cove. The bass have been biting drop-shot plastics, especially in purple or dark red, also in Cloister Cove and in Half Moon Cove. Catfish did well on the full moon fishing early in the month. Trout fishing is slow and no official opening date has been announced as the water temperature is still high. They expect the trout season opener to occur during the weekend of November 17.
