San Diego Symphony season revealed

The 2017–2018 season at San Diego Symphony

Composer and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.

The 2017–2018 Jacobs Masterworks series has been announced by the San Diego Symphony. What wasn’t announced was a new music director. Neither was there any indication of a time table for finding a new director.

So the 2017–2018 season will very much be like the 2016–2017 season, in that there will be several guest conductors. I like the guest conductor approach, but I’m also excited to find out who the next music director is going to be.

There are some interesting pieces on the schedule. The one I think I’m most looking forward to is Sibelius' Symphony No. 5. That piece of music always feels like a miracle with magnificent vistas opening up in the most unexpected of places.

The most intriguing piece of the season would have to be a violin concerto written by classical/jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Marsalis collaborated with violinist Nicola Benedetti in the composition of the piece. Benedetti will be performing the concerto here in San Diego.

There are three fifth symphonies next season. The Sibelius fifth, Prokofiev fifth, and Shostakovich fifth. While those three fifths are not directed related to each other, they do feel as though they are in the same vein of music.

In the video I go over the entire season and riff just a little bit about each piece.
