Fanclub lets the flannel fly

Touring in support of their 2016 album, Here, the Scottish alt-rock band Teenage Fanclub marched into the Belly Up and delivered a set composed of fan favorites.

Fittingly, the band started with “Start Again” off of 1997’s Songs From Northern Britain. Four songs were delivered from both this album and 1995’s Grand Prix, which brought a heavy ’90s nostalgia vibe to the evening. The songs off the new album blended seamlessly with the older material, proving the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies to songwriting as well.

The band finished the main set on a powerful note with an epic performance of their best-known song, “The Concept.” The crowd smiled and sang along to the underground anthem about the girl that wears denim wherever she goes (oh yeah…oh yeeeah) and gave the Fanclub a monstrous cheer when it was all over.

The band returned to the stage for a four-song encore that concluded with the most Dinosaur Jr.–sounding song that Dinosaur Jr. never wrote, the grunge-era classic “Everything Flows.” To accurately capture the face-melting potential of the song, guitarist Norman Blake took a stroll back to his amplifier and cranked that puppy up to ensure the song was delivered in proper, flying-the-flannel fashion.
