Man charged with igniting multiple fires

On July 5, Tyler Carender, 20, was arrested on federal charges of that in fall of last year he committed three arsons at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and Oak Crest Middle School in his home town of Encinitas. He lives next to Oak Crest and a block from St. Andrew's.

According to the indictment, in October 2016 he set fire to the Friendship House Counseling and Youth Center building owned by St. Andrew's. Near the end of that month, he set fire to the administration building at Oak Crest. The first fire caused damage of $200,000 and the second $300,000.

In November, according to the indictment, he used a Molotov cocktail to set fire to the preschool building at St. Andrew's, causing $34,000 in damages. He appears before Magistrate Judge William Gallo July 11 at 2:15 p.m. for a bail/detention hearing.
