Outrigger canoes for newbies

That I haven’t been in an outrigger canoe doesn’t mean I haven’t wished for one. I remember when my first two-piece paddle snapped while “digging in” (paddling hard) a couple miles off La Jolla in roughish seas. I lost my balance, nearly rolled in windswept six-footers, and then realized I was going to have to paddle my sit-on-top plastic kayak back to the beach and land in large surf with half a kayak paddle. Balance was tough. I remember wishing I had an outrigger on the kayak.

For those that would like a calmer experience in the flat of the bay, there are rental options and tryout days for the floating craft. The outrigger canoe is an old and tested sleek and fast design. The San Diego Outrigger Canoe Club is offering a recreational paddle open to newbies, where those interested in the sport of outrigger canoeing can give it a shot. They host these events from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. year-round every Saturday, weather permitting.

Those interested need to join their Meetup group and RSVP, as there are only 18 spots available each week. Organizers advise that “this is a water sport, so dress accordingly, board shorts, dry-fit top,” and “if you need a hat bring it.” Where: on the beach in front of Campland on the Bay, 2211 Pacific Beach Drive.
