Outrigger canoes for newbies

This is a watersport.

I remember wishing I had an outrigger.

That I haven’t been in an outrigger canoe doesn’t mean I haven’t wished for one. I remember when my first two-piece paddle snapped while “digging in” (paddling hard) a couple miles off La Jolla in roughish seas. I lost my balance, nearly rolled in windswept six-footers, and then realized I was going to have to paddle my sit-on-top plastic kayak back to the beach and land in large surf with half a kayak paddle. Balance was tough. I remember wishing I had an outrigger on the kayak.

The San Diego Outrigger Canoe Club is offering a recreational paddle open to newbies, where those interested in the sport of outrigger canoeing can give it a shot. They host these events from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. year-round every Saturday, weather permitting.
