On one of the most coveted streets in the Covenant.

The main residence has six bedrooms and ten baths, spread across 20,408 square feet of indoor living area. This “custom organic modern masterpiece,” said to have taken seven years to complete, was designed by internationally acclaimed architect Guy Dreier and is advertised as being “completely self-sufficient with solar panels fully powering the home and amenities.”

A 1220-square-foot great room “boasts voluminous ceilings with incredible thought for entertaining and flows into the oversized dining room,” with seating for 15 or more guests. “The kitchen is ideal for any entertaining situation yet maintains a warmth and good feel for such a large room,” while both a glass-and-stone staircase and private elevator provide access between levels. The master suite, itself occupying more than 1000 square feet of living space, has a freestanding gas fireplace (one of four on the grounds) between the sitting and sleeping areas.

“The pool and water features were designed with seamless integration between the home and landscape.”

Outside, “the pool and water features were designed with seamless integration between the home and landscape in a manner that creates tranquility,” while “ the owner’s collection of sculptures by the artist Fletcher Benton were thoughtfully considered when designing the landscape,” a task that fell to “renowned landscape architect Theresa Clark.”

There are several acres of citrus orchards on the property’s western slopes.

“The owner was interested in having technology, art and the property’s natural beauty direct the design of the home,” the listing continues, with a series of gardens “designed to respond to the broad range of outdoor experiences that relate to architectural settings, points of destination, areas to observe outward or contemplate within, and open spaces to gather and entertain.” Most of the grounds were designed using a “drought tolerant palette found in Southern California, Australia and South Africa. It is wonderful to see that the selection of native or naturalized plant communities have created a habitat for the indigenous butterflies, bees and humming birds.” There are also several acres of citrus orchards on the property’s western slopes.

Property ownership lies with Sunranch LLC, a corporation with little public information available that appears to have been set up to manage sales of the fruit from the orchards on the property. An address listed for the company leads to a home owned by Andrew Viterbi in La Jolla. Viterbi, along with Irwin Jacobs, was one of the cofounders of local tech giant Qualcomm.

The El Vuelo estate has a current tax valuation of just under $24 million, which carries with it an annual property tax bill in excess of $247,000. It was listed publicly for the first time since 2002 (when it was reported sold for $8,250,000 with a different residence; the current one was built in 2008) in mid-January. The asking price of $45,000,000 is currently the third-highest in San Diego County.
