Star Trek, Grossmont, Art of Elan, and the San Diego Symphony

The Art of Elan has a performance at the San Diego Museum of Art on Tuesday, March 29, at 7 p.m. The Formosa Quartet, Art of Elan’s quartet in residence, will be playing the world premiere of Song Recollections.

Song Recollections was commissioned by Art of Elan and composed by UCSD’s Lei Liang. Music written for the Formosa Quartet by Dana Wilson and pieces by Aaron Copland will complete the program.

Star Trek the Ultimate Voyage will be stopping by the Civic Theater on Thursday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m. The Ultimate Voyage is a touring show that features 50 years of Star Trek music.

The orchestra is accompanied by a 40-foot screen. Scenes from the TV shows and movies are shown as the orchestra plays the Star Trek sound tracks.

On Friday things get real. Mozart's Requiem is in Spring Valley and a violin god is at Symphony Hall.

Mozart is being performed by The Grossmont Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale. The Grossmonters do the choral masterworks quite well. Better even than some other organizations which shall not be named.

The concert is Friday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. The venue is Santa Sophia Catholic Church.

Now we come to the biggie. Midori has been a household name among violin aficionados for decades. She goes by one name so that should give us a clue as to her status.

Midori playing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto No. 1 is a slam dunk. This is a must see and I’m guessing the concerts are going to be full as every violin student in the county and their parents are probably going.

Ever since Midori made her debut at age 11 with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic, she has been in demand around the world as a soloist. In addition to her performing, she is professor of violin at USC's Thornton School of Music and has created an educational foundation for New York City school children.

Her performances with the San Diego Symphony are on Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 3, at 2 p.m.
