Final Symphony at San Diego Symphony

I feel like an idiot saying this, but Comic-Con is coming. If you didn’t know that then, in reality, you’re the idiot — or maybe just new to San Diego.

Comic-Con has had a running relationship with the San Diego Symphony culminating in last year's mega event for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This year might not top that peak experience for Comic-Con attendees, but there is an element of classical music yet again.

This year Final Fantasy is the classical belle of the comic ball. Final Fantasy is a role-playing game that has sold over 100 million copies worldwide.

The music from the game is quite popular and even cracked the top 20 of the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2016. *Final Fantasy” came in at number 17. I’m not sure if that is an indication of its quality or an indictment of the Classic FM audience.

Whatever the case may be, the Final Fantasy soundtrack has been packaged into a 45-minute symphonic exposition entitled Final Symphony: Music from Final Fantasy VI, VII, and X.

Prior to the concert, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguch will be participating in a panel discussion moderated by local choral conductor Angel Mannion. The panel starts at 6:00 p.m.

The concert is the product of a company called Merregnon Studios. The show has received "rave reviews" in Japan and Europe and is coming to the U.S. for the first time this summer.

The concert is at Symphony Hall as opposed to the waterfront pops venue used for The Force Awakens last year. The concert is Thursday, July 21, at 8:00 p.m.
