Among the variables WalletHub looked at were percentage of women-owned businesses and growth, number of employees, and average revenue in those businesses.

The San Diego metro area comes in 92nd of 100 metro areas. There is a lot of controversy about the high ceiling for women in tech businesses, and this survey reflects the problems. Dead last, 100th, is San Jose (Silicon Valley); San Francisco is 89th and Portland 91st.

Three of the top four are from Tennessee: Nashville (1), Chattanooga (2), and Memphis (4).
