Lake Wohlford to receive 6,000 pounds of trout

First plant of the season

Inshore: A little rough weather kept a lot of anglers ashore this past week as only 37 boats got out with well under 1000 passengers total. Even so, the bottom fishing for reds, lingcod and whitefish has been very good lately. Sheephead are gnawing away on anything shrimplike in the deeper kelp and on the high spots. Calico bass are still biting in the kelp beds, though the average fish has been under legal size (14”).

Place

Lake Wohlford

25453 Lake Wohlford Road, Escondido

In the tap water, San Vicente has been churning out some nice-sized winter largemouth bass for the anglers targeting them. Trout are biting very well at Lake Jennings and Santee Lakes with some units going over 8 pounds. Wohlford will receive its first trout plant of 6,000 pounds on Saturday, so that might be a good plan for Sunday’s fishing.

Outside: The bluefin tuna bite is tapering off out at Cortez and Tanner banks, though a few 1.5 day boats are still giving it a shot, most trips within 2 day range are focusing on rockfish and lingcod as is normal for this time of year. We haven’t seen ‘normal’ for a few years due to warm water. Outside and south, yellowfin tuna and some yellowtail are still being found within 3-day range, but most of the pelagic species are moving south of Isla Cedros. Long range boats on 10 day and longer trips are scoring on very large yellowfin tuna off the Ridge, south of Cabo and outside of Puerto Vallarta near Roca Corbeteña.

11/27 – 12/3 Dock Totals: 624 anglers aboard 37 boats out of San Diego landings this past week caught 65 bluefin tuna, 33 yellowfin tuna, 5 yellowtail, 11 calico bass, 12 sand bass, 1,333 rockfish, 12 lingcod, 4 bonito, 55 sheephead, 103 whitefish, 165 mackerel, 2 bocaccio, 50 blacksmith perch, 1 cabezon and 9 California spiny lobster.

Fish Plants: 12/10 Wohlford, trout (6000 – first plant of the season), 12/14 Poway, trout (1500)
