Adios, Olivera: Padres render newly acquired offensive threat Designated For Assignment

Padres’ Rod Fouler: “After further review, it appears we misunderstood what was meant by ‘offensive threat.’ Also, ‘power hitter.’”

Hector Olivera, putting the “bat” in “battery”?

Acquired from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Matt Kemp, third baseman Hector Olivera is finishing up an 82-game suspension following his arrest for assaulting a woman and leaving visible bruises on her body. It’s possible that he is also finishing up his Major League Baseball career, as he has failed in grand fashion to live up to the promise of his initial $62 million contract from the Los Angeles Dodgers, and will likely be cut loose by the Padres following their decision to remove him from their roster. But at least the team will still have to pay the $30 million contractually due him. And they still wind up saving money on Kemp.
