Local retirees rake it in as though they're still employed
Data from the California Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) reveal that 1535 San Diego area government retirees collected at least $100,000 a year last year, according to Transparent California, a watchdog organization. That figure was up 14 percent from the previous year. Transparent California got the data from a public records request.
According to Transparent California, the $311,365 paid William Garrett, former city manager of El Cajon, was the fifth largest regular payout to any CalPERS member in 2015.
The next three highest payouts in metro San Diego were Rita Geldert, former Vista city manager, $232,041; James Thomson, former Chula Vista employee, $229,816; and George Eiser, former National City attorney, $220,370.
The cities with at least 20 full-career employees that had the highest average full-career pensions for non-safety retirees were San Marcos, $101,390, the second highest in the state; Carlsbad, $96,922, fifth highest in California; and Vista, $93,785, seventh highest.
