Jobs increase, but unemployment rate rises

The San Diego County unemployment rate rose to 5 percent in October, up from 4.6 percent in September, according to the California Employment Development Department.

The number of jobs rose 10,800 in the month, with government jobs leading the way with a gain of 7200 jobs. Between October of last year and October of this year, jobs rose by 40,200.

All told, this represents a modest, continuing improvement in the local jobs market, but these numbers do not reflect quality of jobs. Over the past several decades, median job income has declined, adjusted for inflation.
