Everything expired except the rider

Motorcyclist who crashed didn't have valid tags or license

A motorcyclist ended up hospitalized November 6 after a failed attempt to evade sheriff's deputies.

According to Sgt. Daniel Morsch, deputies attempted to stop the rider of a Kawasaki Ninja for expired registration shortly before 3:30 near the intersection of Mast Boulevard and Cuyamaca Street in Santee. Refusing to yield, the rider instead sped off and led authorities on a short pursuit that ended with the rider crashing in the parking lot of Edgemoor Hospital about a half-mile away.

The suspect, later identified as 41-year-old Anthony Ortega, was able to rise under his own power after the crash. Deputies attempted to engage Ortega, "who was not cooperative with their commands and was combative," according to Morsch.

Ortega was then subjected to pepper spray and a taser before deputies were able to place him under arrest for "felony evading, fighting law enforcement, and for having a suspended driver's license."

After complaining of pain, Ortega was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital for evaluation before being medically cleared for booking into jail.
