Weekly fish report

½ Day - ¾ Day: Rockfish, sculpin and calico bass are the main catch on the ½ day boats. ¾ day trips to the Coronado Islands are still putting up good numbers on the yellows as well as lingcod, rockfish and bonito. Sand Bass, halibut and calicos are starting to show.

1 Day to 2.5 Day: The yellowtail are still a bit slow in the cool water zone south of Ensenada and San Quintin, though the rockfish and lingcod are coming in good numbers and with size. There seems to still be a few bluefin tuna on the Cortez Bank for those heading out that way.

Long-Range - Baja: Strange mix in the La Paz/ East Cape area with warmer water early. Around Cerralvo Island they’re getting the usual species like pargo, cabrilla, bonito, sierra, jack crevalle and smaller amberjack. However, the anglers are also gettinga summer-like bite on rooster fish, school-sized dorado and even yellowfin tuna, a striped marlin and wahoo were hooked.

Freshwater: Lots of good news in the freshwater as several large bass, catfish and trout have been caught from the area lakes. Bass from 14 to 17 pounds, including 2 potential lake records, have been caught this week at both Skinner and Dixon. Poway produced a 33.2-pound blue catfish and Cuyamaca is putting out some big trout, including a new lake record rainbow at 17.5 pounds.

Whale Report: It’s late in the season, but they are still seeing the big grey whales in the calving grounds at Bahia Magdalena and San Ignacio in Baja. They are usually gone by now but they are still seeing a pretty decent number of cows and calves, which indicates an extended season in San Diego as they migrate back to Arctic waters for the summer.

March 29 dock totals

Chubasco 2 Sportfishing hosted 27 anglers aboard 1 boat and reported 115 vermilion rockfish, 3 sand bass, 25 rockfish and 3 calico bass caught.

72 anglers aboard 2 boats out of Fisherman's Landing caught 10 sculpin, 1 sand bass, 185 rockfish, 1 lingcod, 2 calico bass and 1 sheephead, with 50 calico bass released.

H&M Landing reported 174 anglers aboard 6 boats with a total catch of 507 rockfish, 110 yellowtail, 5 sheephead, 2 sand bass, 26 bonito, 12 sculpin, 1 halibut, 1 halfmoon, 3 lingcod and 3 calico bass.

93 anglers aboard 3 boats out of Point Loma Sportfishing caught 2 whitefish, 9 sculpin, 130 rockfish, 1 rubberlip seaperch, 2 calico bass, 3 bonito, 2 sand bass and 73 yellowtail, with 57 calico bass released.

Seaforth Sportfishing sent 247 anglers out aboard 8 boats and reported 290 yellowtail, 640 rockfish, 151 lingcod, 26 bonito, 20 sheephead, 1 barracuda, 149 vermilion rockfish, 3 sculpin, 80 whitefish and 1 halibut caught.

There is some really good fishing going on in the La Paz area right now, with wahoo, yellowtail, roosterfish, cabrilla and pargo showing well. Also, there are some good grade yellowfin tuna breezing through the area. Here's a report from friend Jonathan Roldan of Tailhunters International.
