The sing of the line

The Red Rooster is making its way south past Cedros Island en route to the Hurricane Bank and concentrating on the great wahoo fishing along the way. Yesterday, they boated over 100 of one of the ocean's fastest fish. It's hard to imagine a fish going 65 mph and the sing of the line straining to keep up unless you have been there. And for eating? Oh my, oh my... just once you have to try wahoo and you'll be hooked. Point Loma Seafood has some really good smoked fish. The next time you are in the 'hood get a sample of their wahoo. Just do it.

Few local boats went out in the blustery weather yesterday. Those that did found good yellowtail fishing deep in 160' of water just off the San Diego coast. Tuna crab and bait are holding them as there is no sign of market squid yet. The 1/2 day boats concentrated on that bite and caught about 2 per rod. Why not? 20 pound yellowtail and 62 degree water in January is not common and, c'mon, who doesn't like hamachi or a nice grilled fillet?

Same thing up and down the line from LA to the Baja coast. Lots of yellowtail. Some deep, some marauding bait on the surface further south. Even La Paz is getting them a little early.
