Maybe would-be cop-killer unsuccessful

Sheriff's deputies arrested an El Cajon man on Monday, January 5, who reportedly called the station in order to issue death threats, promising to kill any law-enforcement officials who responded to his call.

Shortly after 6:30 on the morning of January 5, deputies and campus police from Cuyamaca College in the unincorporated Rancho San Diego neighborhood arrived on the 1500 block of Greenwick Place, where they met 40-year-old Robert Khazin.

Authorities attempted to engage Khazin in his driveway, but according to a report from Sgt. Karla Taft, Khazin continued to verbally threaten officers before retreating into his house, where he "armed himself with a makeshift slingshot with a 2.5 pound metal weight and also utilized a tube to propel metal ball bearings at the deputies."

Khazin eventually attempted to flee via his backyard but was taken down by a K-9 unit, suffering a dog bite to the leg. He was taken into custody and booked on eight counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Per Taft's report, mental illness is believed to have played a role in Khazin's behavior.
