Sarah Stieber paints in what she calls “Electric Realism,” a style that projects the “amplification of real life,” and uses bright, vivid colors that suggest “wishful seeing.” Stieber created “Fierce” in 2014, originally intending the 48˝x 48˝ oil painting as part of her Dolls series, which she describes as an “overstylized, fashion-y series of doll-like characters.” But as she painted, “Fierce” took on a deeper meaning. “Each of the hands covered in jewels are these bright, flashy, seductive forces in society that are constantly bombarding all of us,” Stieber says, “and in the image her gaze is very fierce, focused and concentrated. It has, to me, a sense of peace within the chaos.”

The complexity of the human brain permits the development of sophisticated behavioral repertoires, such as language, tool use, self-awareness, symbolic thought, cultural learning and consciousness. From such dynamic complexity emerged extraordinary artistic masterpieces, unique from our species. Art is the most complex representation of our minds.
Here, I used human neurons, derived from stem cells, to illustrate the complexity and communication of our neurons, to create, feel and understand art. This is a new perspective on human artistic manifestation and also celebrates the strong stem cell and neuroscience community in San Diego.

The 1959 Chevy Impala depicted in the photo partially ignited the lowrider lifestyle in Japan back in the 1980s. In 2014, Miguel Alatorre brought the car back home to Logan Heights and restored it to its current state.

The Mission Valley Mall has four large pillars facing the freeway 8. Dyse-One and Haslr painted the giant murals which when combined spell the word "creative". We interview both about their transition from underground to what is now embraced by corporate America and the Law Enforcement agencies.
Isabel takes a walk into the Walking Dead booth at the San Diego Comic Con. Many man-hours and artistic talent is placed in creating the display for this interactive set. We speak to the bloody zombie keepers and get a glimpse on how CGI (computer graphics) hasn't completely replaced good old makeup and set building, or will it?

The title of this ceramic piece is “Only 6 Left” referring to the number of Northern White Rhinos left in the entire world. Their populations have been decimated for the sale of their horns which Asian markets highly prize. Their mistaken belief that these horns can cure a variety of maladies has created an extensive poaching network and black market. The rhino horns sell for more per ounce than gold. Just after this piece was finished one of the remaining six rhinos died at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, leaving only 5 white rhinos left in the entire world. Art can play an important roll in stimulating public dialog and that was the intent of this piece. Here is a link to the story in the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2014/12/15/a-northern-white-rhino-has-died-there-are-now-five-left-in-the-entire-world/
