3000+ cars, more than nine DUIs

Authorities staging a DUI checkpoint in Mission Bay beginning Saturday night and running into Sunday morning were more successful than the June 6 screening in Oceanside, with a total of ten intoxicated individuals arrested in nine stopped vehicles.

The Oceanside checkpoint stopped 335 cars; no DUI arrests were made.

According to a report from Sheriff Sgt. David Cheever, 3,186 vehicles passed through the Pacific Beach checkpoint staffed by representatives from a host of local law enforcement agencies. Eighteen of those cars were sent to a secondary screening area, with eight drivers being placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. A ninth was caught driving under the influence of both alcohol and other drugs.

A tenth suspect was arrested for public drunkenness after his driver was led off. Two more citations were issued for marijuana possession, and eight vehicles were impounded at the checkpoint.
