Belching Beaver going the brewpub route

Brewery expansion remains in full swing, with yet another local brewing company closing in on a satellite location. This time it’s one of the breweries that helped start the tasting room trend, Belching Beaver Brewery. Back in 2012, the Vista-based operation became the second San Diego company to go this route, opening up a tasting-only spot in North Park. This time, they’re upping the ante while staying closer to home. Owner Tom Vogel and company are working to close on a 6,600-square-foot former bank space at 302 East Broadway they will convert into a brewpub.

A money depository may seem ill-fitted for a craft brewery tasting room, but given the amenities Vogel lists for the property, it sounds like an ideal location. There will be a pair of outdoor patios. One will be outfitted “bistro-style” with tables and chairs, while the other will resemble the campground, park-like setting of the patio at Belching Beaver’s brewery, thanks to trees, fire pits, and Adirondack chairs. Belching Beaver is also playing with the idea of using the walk-in safe and safety deposit boxes as storage for cigars and Mug Club glassware. And if the ABC would allow it — which they have already stated they will not — Vogel would use the drive-up teller window for mobile growler fills. (Not as easy as 1-2-3, after all.)

Inside, guests will be able to enjoy food and drink, including house beers produced on a three-barrel system, by a 10-foot-long indoor fireplace. There will also be a children’s room for patrons with kids. Belching Beaver will contract with a kitchen consultant group for the food side of the brewpub. In addition to the company’s beers, the brewpub will also offer a selection of wines. Vogel reports the company will take their time on this project and estimates an opening timeframe of early next year.
