Denies assault, mayhem, torture

It was before 2 a.m. on Monday, April 21, when four Oceanside police officers responded to a report of yelling and fighting in a ground-floor unit at the Mission Hills apartment complex on Rancho Del Oro Drive.

Police found a man unconscious on the bathroom floor of the suspect’s apartment, according to a report just released.

When cops knocked on the door, they reportedly heard someone inside call out, “The cops are here, I’m going to jail for sure,” according to an affidavit recently filed by one investigator.

Raymond Derek Leonberger, 31, opened the front door of his apartment and reportedly told officers to call for an ambulance because he “beat-up someone badly,” the investigator claimed.

Officers noticed that Leonberger was shirtless and had blood stains on his arms and upper torso and the front of his jeans, according to the report.

When police entered the apartment they found a 22-year-old Latino man lying on the floor of the bathroom, partially in the shower. The victim was unconscious and bleeding from the head, police reported.

Investigators claim that Leonberger told them, “He disrespected my family, so I had to kick his ass” and “I didn’t mean to fuck him up that bad.”

Leonberger reportedly told officers that he beat the victim from the patio area to the master bedroom, where they saw a blood-soaked carpet, blood splatter on the walls, and a yellow container of Lysol cleaner, according to the report.

Leonberger is described in sheriff’s records as white, six feet tall, and 220 pounds. He pleads not guilty to attempted murder, aggravated mayhem, torture, and assault. Leonberger is held in lieu of $1 million bail and is next due in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse on May 27.
