UCSD and SDSU Engage in Social Drinking Contest

Kids these days…

ALL HANDS MANNING THE STOMACH PUMP, LA JOLLA — The battle between established party paradise SDSU and the upchucking upstart UCSD has officially gone public, thanks to the social networking platform Twitter. Two weeks ago, an article in the San Diego Reader noted that UCSD's Sun God festival had grown so boozy that the school had been forced to call in an "internationally recognized expert on alcohol abuse among college students" in response to the skyrocketing rates of arrests and medical transfers associated with the school's annual Sun God festival. The expert, University of Texas at Austin psychologist Dr. Kim Fromme, charged UCSD $40,000 for advice that included such priceless pearls as, "pace yourself," "avoid Jell-O shots," and "beer before liquor, never sicker."

I didn't know they made mannequins like that.

News of the expense led SDSU Tweet machine @SDSUsuds to quip, "$40K? That's almost an SDSU frat's annual beer tab! #learnfromus #SDSU>UCSD."

Two days later, USCD student @TRITON tweeted a photograph depicting an elaborate mannequin prank at the school's Sun God statue. All of the mannequins' posteriors (not visible in the photo) were marked with the SDSU logo.

Bonus points to SDSU for the mythological reference!

The Twitter war was on, and the dueling hashtags both trended for the better part of a week until a Twitpic (pictured, right) showed up on @SDSUsuds feed, captioned simply "Mascot matchup — no contest."

SD on the QT has so far been unable to verify the veracity of the so-called Mascot Matchup, but the #UCSD>SDSU hashtag has remained unused since the photo was posted. More on this story as it develops.
