Data will be gathered on airborne and waterborne releases

A panel of overseers that will supervise a 12-month study of the cancer risks associated with living near the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station has been identified, according to the Temecula Patch.

In the works since mid-2012, the study, once launched, will examine populations within 50 kilometers (roughly 30 miles) of seven of the country's 65 nuclear reactor facilities, including San Onofre.

Data will be gathered on airborne and waterborne releases, and a computer model is to be developed evaluating the potential radiation dose effects on the subject populations.

While information on the specific communities to be studied has not been released, areas within the projected radius could range as far as Murrieta or even Menifee in southern Riverside County, and to San Marcos and Encinitas locally.
