The Top Knot

This fall it’s all about the top knot. Buns have been in vogue for decades but this season, the traditional yawn-worthy updo has been replaced with an updated effortless and chic look. The top knot is the less pretentious cousin of the chignon. The best part is that it is a simple and versatile. With a top knot it’s easy to go from casual to formal. You can pull it off while running errands or at a swanky event.

While attending Fashion Week San Diego, dozens of attendees sported the top knot. In my opinion Angelina Minnocci pulled off the look best. Her top knot looked casual cool paired with bright colors and simple accessories.

The 21-year-old freelance designer wore a vivid red J.Crew jacket with a pinstripe lining. You can find a similar style available at J.Crew now in their School Boy Blazer for $198.

Minnocci’s white blouse is from Nordstrom Rack and her jeans are Citizens of Humanity. Her green purse with the bow accent is Kate Spade (retails for around $498). Her earrings, bracelets, and rings are from Nordstrom. Minnocci wore a pair of black leather flats with a gold tip ($98) from a newly opened store, C. Wonder, in Fashion Valley Mall.

Here’s an easy step by step guide to achieve a top knot like Angelina’s:

1. Use two hands to create a high ponytail—the higher the better. Don’t bother using a rubber band, it will be a hindrance when creating the knot.
2. Twist the hair around your finger making it into a rope.
3. Twist the “roped” hair clockwise like you would to make a bun.
4. Tuck the bottom in and pull it through the middle of the bun to create a knotted look.
5. Let pieces fall as desired. Use hair spray or gel to tame fly aways. Use bobby pins to secure.
