Group of horses found, captured in Boulevard

County Animal Services is looking for the owner of a half dozen horses discovered running wild through Cottonwood Campground in the East County mountain community of Boulevard.

According to authorities, the county was contacted by the federal Bureau of Land Management, which operates the campground and adjacent McCain Valley recreation area, with one of its officers reporting the six horses had been observed on the loose for a period of weeks, and that they had been corralled last week.

Animal Services responded, but found only one of the six willing to be haltered and led to a trailer. Officers returned on Monday and were able to load the horses into trailers with assistance from the San Diego Humane Society. The animals were transported to a shelter in Bonita, where they were found to be in generally good health.

The horses will be held until Saturday as attempts to reach their owner are ongoing. If they are not claimed, they’ll be placed for adoption at some later point.
