Navy commander caught in scheme with Malaysian businessman

U.S. Navy commander Jose Luis Sanchez was arrested in Tampa today (Nov. 6) and charged with accepting prostitutes, luxury travel, and $100,000 in cash from a foreign defense contractor. Sanchez will be returned to San Diego to face charges.

Commander Michael Vannak Khem Misiewicz and Naval Criminal Investigative Service supervisory special agent John Bertrand Beliveau II have been charged separately in connection with bribery allegations.

Sanchez was charged with sending sensitive information to Leonard Glenn Francis of Malaysia, who heads Glenn Defense Marine Asia, which provides husbanding services such as supplying food, water, fuel, tugboats, and trash removal to ships in foreign ports.

Sanchez allegedly sent Francis information that could help Francis's company win Navy business. In return, Sanchez got the cash, prostitutes, and luxury travel, according to the charges that were unsealed today.
