Bad brake light leads to bust of Missouri man

Two men were pulled over by police on the afternoon of November 2 for having a non-functioning brake light on their car.

The incident, which occurred in front of the Ocean Beach Hotel on Newport Avenue, resulted in one of the men being arrested and put in the back of a police patrol car.

The arrestee was found to have outstanding felony warrants for not paying child-support payments in Missouri, according to Sgt. Nick Borrelli. He said some states won't extradite such perpetrators, and Missouri is one of them.

When I saw one of the four officers at the scene searching their car, I asked if they needed to have a search warrant. Sgt. Borelli told me that the man they arrested had waived his Fourth Amendment rights to unreasonable searches and seizures and because of that, they didn't need a search warrant. Nothing illegal was found in the vehicle.

Borrelli is part of the Street Crimes Unit, and unlike other police officers, they are not subject to calls from dispatch but can patrol where they see fit to do so, he told me.
