Downtown TailGate on hold

Awhile back, I reported that TailGate Beer, a business owned by SDSU alum Wesley Keegan, was working on putting in a brewpub in the East Village. Keegan teamed up with experienced downtown venue veterans for the project. Given that, it seemed the whole thing would go through rather easily. However, after checking in with Keegan, it looks as though a set of snags will significantly delay TailGate Beer Tap & Terrace.

Keegan says he and his partners are still adamant about establishing their venue in San Diego, even if it means tweaking his plan a bit or starting over from scratch. Currently, TailGate’s beers are produced on a contract basis at a brewery outside of San Diego County, so building a local brewhouse would allow Keegan, after six years in business, to finally join the ranks of the San Diego Brewers Guild, which requires maintenance of an in-county brewing facility as a condition of membership.

In the meantime, TailGate is set to introduce a new line of beers called the Superfan Series. The first of those beers will be Dodgy Knight, an 8% alcohol-by-volume, 95-IBU imperial IPA. It’s a departure from the session beers that Keegan built his business on. Dodgy Knight will debut in 12-ounce can four-packs next month and be followed up later this year with the second Superfan Series beer, an imperial stout that will come in at 12% ABV.
