Electrical transformer explodes in Point Loma

Power outage lasts a few hours

During the early evening on July 25, an underground transformer overheated and exploded on Dickens Street in Point Loma. Power was knocked out at homes and businesses along the bayfront, from North Harbor Drive and all the way down Shelter Island.

No one was injured, but cars parked next to where the concrete vault was blown out of the ground were showered with dirt and debris

While most businesses were forced to close, H&M Landing sportfishing and their Galley ice cream and sandwich shop were prepared for such an emergency: both establishments had generators operating within 30 minutes, continuing with the selling of fishing trips, cold beer, and ice cream until power was restored at around 9:30 p.m.
