Sheriff's Department to hold live shooter training at Grossmont College

The Santee Sheriff’s Station has announced that deputies will be conducting “live shooter” training on the Grossmont College campus beginning this afternoon (July 16) at 2 p.m. and continuing until as late as 10:00 tonight.

Other local law enforcement agencies will also be participating in the drills, in which sounds of gunfire will be broadcast over a sound system and authorities, wielding mock weapons, will roam the halls, practicing techniques for tracking down a gunman. After neutralizing a threat, participants will train in evacuating classrooms, assisted by local teenage volunteers.

Though most of the school is out, some students and faculty will be on campus for summer sessions while the drills take place – the Sheriff’s Department says those individuals have been notified of the training via e-mails and text messages, and that their classes should continue uninterrupted. Deputies are also advising local residents not to be alarmed at the high volume of law enforcement vehicles in the area during training, or by the sounds of gunfire, which will only be simulated.
