The fire started on a open space preserve and burned close to homes. A 100-foot firebreak along the east edge of the preserve helped stop the fire from advancing closer to homes that line the preserve.

There are numerous homeless camps in the area where the fire appeared to start. Saturday, August 17 a fire broke out in a homeless camp area across I-8 south of where the fire burned on August 20.

Sheriff Fire and Rescue Chopper 10 helped douse the flames as ground crews worked their way eastward and southward to surround the fire. Fire engine units were parked in driveways of homes along the edge of the open space preserve. As of 4:00 p.m. the fire was completely out.
