Jim “Mouse” Robb Day declared by San Diego City Council

In the quiet neighborhood of Azure Vista (now more widely known as Sunset Cliffs) a happening went down on April 27. It was quite a scene, attended by cats with names such as Lizard, Tar, Bud, Crobes, Tbone, Smeurz, Butter, CR, DC, Skippy, Hooty Hoo, Gidget, Bird, Shack, and about 200 friends and family of Jim “Mouse” Robb.

The occasion was the celebration of Mouse’s 80th birthday. The Sunset Cliffs Surfing Association put on the shindig, and surfers from all up and down the coast and the islands were there. But there was more to it than just a surfer stomp; it was a gathering of the tribe and a true community celebration of a man who has touched the lives of countless people.

In between sets of music by the Blonde Brothers and Friends and the Mighty Rawtones Experience, the surf club presented Mouse with a new stand-up paddle board and art work by local artist Shane Bass.

At about 5 p.m., councilman Kevin Faulconer and another representative of the city showed up to present Mouse with a plaque designating April 27, 2013, as “Jim Mouse Robb Day.”

Fire Station 22 showed their support, stopping by in a fire truck. Speeches were made about Mouse serving the nation in the Air Force, serving the community as a lifeguard, and acting as mentor for loads of surfers and people he has influenced.

Champion surfer Linda Benson spoke of how Mouse befriended her as a young surfer and helped her to learn the ropes after she moved to Ocean Beach as a girl.
