Normal Heights Intersection Reconfiguration Completed

Reconstruction and reconfiguration of the Cherokee-Madison-East Mountain View-Ward Road intersections in Normal Heights was recently completed.

Begun in fits and starts last summer (including a shutdown when funds ran out) in conjunction with the 40th Street Promenade, the traffic-calming measures have narrowed intersections and slowed vehicular traffic. There are new sidewalks, extended concrete driveways, and much larger parkways that could become neighborhood gardens.

Additionally, 19 coast live oak trees were planted, and existing palm trees remained in place or were relocated. New striped crosswalks, curbs painted red in critical locations, and new ADA ramps were also added.

The project was funded by a federal "smart growth" grant, managed by Caltrans, and administered by SANDAG.
