Alleged Oceanside Killer Was Seeking Next Female

Within hours of allegedly shooting his second wife in the chest with a gun, Dontaye Henderson texted a message to a woman in Alabama whom he had previously dated: “I’ve left my wife for good. I’m flying out to see you,” he wrote.

In prior days, he had sent texts to the same woman, saying that he “wished he kept her” and that he had “fallen out of love” with his wife.

These allegations are made in court documents filed by prosecutor Keith Watanabe. Henderson’s trial is expected to begin in the Vista courthouse this week for the shooting death of his 25-year-old wife Tamara.

Some days before the fatal incident, on January 1, 2011, then-28-year-old Henderson phoned a different former girlfriend to tell her that he had divorced his wife and wanted to come live with her in Kentucky, the prosecutor also alleges.

Henderson was convicted of raping his first wife at knifepoint in 2003; that woman had fled Georgia in fear of him, but he tracked her down in Oceanside. She survived the marriage and is expected to testify in the upcoming trial.

Henderson is pleading not guilty to charges of murder and being in possession of a firearm. Police say Henderson fled the Oceanside apartment where he had left his second wife dying, but the fugitive was caught at a St. Louis, Missouri, bus station three days later, on January 4, 2011.

Prosecutor Watanabe said Henderson was traveling en route to Kentucky and had a .40 caliber Taurus semi-automatic handgun with him at the time.
