Junior Seau’s New Surfboard

The California Surf Museum in Oceanside is displaying a surfboard that honors Junior Seau’s connection to the ocean as well as the community he touched.

Through the effort of artist Cherrie La Porte, the glass mosaic deck of the surfboard features a wave made of Charger-blue glass pieces and white glass pieces forming his number (55), framed by lightning bolts made of blue and gold tiles.

The top portion of the surfboard deck displays various glass pieces from the San Diego Center for Children, which treats children with learning, emotional, and behavioral challenges and which benefited from the involvement of the Junior Seau Foundation. The children of the center crafted the decorative glass pieces. The surfboard was provided by Rerip, a Solana Beach nonprofit organization that recycles used surfboards.

The board is on display at the museum at the request of the Junior Seau Foundation and will remain there at least through mid-September. The museum is located at 312 Pier View Way in Oceanside and is open daily from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (until 8 on Thursdays) and closes on major holidays.
