Hands Across the Sand for Clean Energy

Last year at this time, the British Petroleum oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico had created an environmental disaster. The June 26, 2010, Hands Across the Sand demonstration was a response to the spill: groups of concerned citizens all over the world linked hands on beaches to make a statement about the precious nature of our oceans and to champion clean-energy solutions.

This year, on June 25, at high noon one block north of Crystal Pier, the gathering drew about 50 people, approximately half the number of people who attended last year.

The Hands Across the Sand movement specifies offshore oil-drilling as a threat. The group's website notes: "Expanding offshore oil drilling is not the answer, embracing Clean Energy is."
