SDSU’s Bike and Board Lane a Success

Last summer, when the newly installed on-campus bike path along Campanile Walkway opened at SDSU, college president Stephen Weber stated, "Not all education takes place in the classroom." He was complimenting SDSU’s Enviro-Business Society and Associated Students for their leadership in turning the bike/skate lane into a reality.

The lane took years of planning and organization to get off the ground. In 2008, the student-run Enviro-Business Society "presented a resolution to the Associated Students for the installation of campus-wide bike lanes to help mitigate traffic, increase accessibility, and most importantly, to assist the campus in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions," according to the SDSU website.

In 2009, the Associated Students commissioned a a bike-lane study from a landscape-architecture firm. In the spring of 2010, construction began on the lane; the opening took place on the first day of the fall 2010 semester, August 30.

Since then, according to SDSU’s website, "Students have given nothing but positive support for the bike/skateboard lane." Now, a more extensive inner-campus route of several lanes is being considered. Associated Students president Grant Mack sees the Campanile Walkway lane as "just the beginning."
