The Cult Maintains Mystique at 4th&B

The Cult kicked off their American tour in San Diego to a packed house at 4th&B. Touring in support of their most recent release, Capsule One, 2010 finds the band sounding fresh. Even 25-year-old hits like "She Sells Sanctuary" sounded far from dated, as the band ripped through a collection of new and classic material. Older songs proved most popular throughout the evening, but there was no denying some well-crafted new material as well.

Vocalist Ian Astbury's gruff Morrison-esque vocals were as captivating as ever set against brilliant guitar work by Billy Duffy. The guys looked and sounded vibrant, keeping the audience on their feet until the house lights came up.

While newer material led to a mid-show lull, the set ended explosively as the band blasted through a series of its biggest ’80s hits, including “Fire Woman,” “Love Removal Machine,” and “Wild Flower.” With razor sharp anthems and hair still intact, The Cult has accomplished that rare feat of maintaining an element of mystique and coolness with age.
