Carlsbad Teen Staggers into Traffic, Then Rescued

At around 9:00 p.m. on September 6, a delivery driver for the Pizza Hut on Cannon Road stopped for a girl who stepped off the curb against a red light. She was in her late teens and nearly fell as she staggered into the first lane. By the time she got to the second lane, she was waving and smiling at the driver.

The delivery driver proceeded down South Melrose Avenue near Buena Vista High School. He then looked into his rearview mirror and saw the girl sprawled in the third lane.

“I immediately pulled over to help her because cars were coming,” he said. “By the time I [returned to the girl’s side], I had waved off two cars that were coming right at her.” The driver said the girl reeked of beer and was wearing dark clothing, which made her difficult to see.

Then, a young man passing by in a van pulled over. “I think I know this girl,” he said, but did not elaborate on how he knew her. The two men helped the girl to her feet and, while continuing to wave off cars, got her to the side of the road.

According to the delivery driver, who is in his 60s, it took several minutes for the girl to let go of him. “She enjoyed being in my arms,” he said. The other man then called 911 and a sheriff’s deputy took over. The younger man took off, and the pizza delivery driver went on to make his final delivery of the night.
